Seoulsync has compiled another list of events for hungry travelers and eager adventurists. Even though the name say “Seoul Events & Attractions” don’t worry, there are events outside of Seoul too. So without further adieu here are Seoulsync’s “Best of June” events and attractions!

Art Exhibits

There are many things Seoul offers that have become popularized. 24/7 business hours and delivery. Mouth-watering Korean food. A dusk to dawn nightlife scene. Elegant hanok villages, beautiful temples, and grand palaces. What of the art scene though? It took several years (sadly) to realize that Seoul boasts over 100 art galleries and museums. These establishments consistently bring to the city world-class exhibitions that spotlight the work of internationally renowned artists. Rest assured, Seoul is as good of a place as any to get cultured and there’s definitely an exhibit out there tailored to your tastes.

Hangaram Art Museum  |  A Dream I Dreamed  |  Now – 6.15 Seoul Arts Center is holding its largest solo artist exhibition thus far, showcasing the avant-garde and acclaimed works of Yayoi Kusama. Kusama continues to have an illustrious career with some of her installations, sculptures, and paintings commanding prices in the hundreds of thousands. Well known for using ordinary objects as the subject in her art in addition to using minimalistic textures and shapes as motifs, this exhibit is not to be missed if you love modern art.

Seoul Museum of Art (Seosomun)  |  Is It Noise?  |  Now – 6.22 SeMa is comprised of the Seosomun main building located in the heart of Seoul with 3 other branches situated in outlying districts. Although international artists such as Tim Burton have been showcased here, a key focus on their agenda is to promote domestic works and Korean contemporary artists. Explore an aural soundscape through this ‘sound art’ exhibit as 19 musicians dive into the context of media technology.

Movies

The summer blockbuster season is finally here! Some of the most anticipated western movies of the year are finally going to be arriving in Korean theaters. Look for these movies this month:

1. Edge of Tomorrow – June 4th Those who were a big fan of Tom Cruise’s last flick Oblivion are going to be happy that Cruise is sticking to the genre and returning in this Sci-fi war epic. Hype for the film has been strong ever since its initial trailer debut back in December. Guns, alien invasions, and mobile mech-warrior suits? Sign us up. The film is directed by Doug Liman who also directed Mr. and Mrs. Smith and the Bourne Identity. Cruise plays Cage, a soldier in the near-future where nations around the world are trying to fight off an alien invasion. However, Cage has the strange ability to be able to re-live the same day over and over again; but only if he is killed during it. Starring Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, & Bill Paxton. The Latest Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7zpo3hU3d4

2. Locke June 19th Tom Hardy stars in a unique style of film that has previously never been seen: a movie that takes place entirely in a car with Tom Hardy as the solo driver. Critics are praising the suspense film as a rejuvenation of both cinema and acting. We recommend readers check out the trailer to get a From IMDB: “Ivan Locke, a dedicated family man and successful construction manager, receives a phone call on the eve of the biggest challenge of his career that sets in motion a series of events that threaten his careful cultivated existence.” Starring Tom Hardy, Olivia Colman, &Ruth Wilson The Latest Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MyoO35P41YM

3. Nymphomaniac: Vol. 1 June 19th If you have friends that are obsessed with cinema, then no doubt they’ve probably at one time told you about Lars Von Trier. Trier has built the latter part of his career around making controversial films. Nymphomaniac seems to be a continuation of that trend. As it sounds, is a film exploring the different facets of sex. From rape, to virgin experiences, addiction, it’s all in there. The film was unrated back in the United States, and we’re not exactly sure if Nymphomaniac will be cut or altered for its Korean release. Starring: Charlotte Gainsbourg, Shia Labeouf, & Stellan Skarsgard The Latest Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gdxzno5Xp2Y

4. Transformers: Age of Extinction June 26th The first TRUE blockbuster of the year! Michael Bay (despite saying he was done with Transformers) is back to direct the 4th Transformers and what is speculated to be the start of another trilogy. As fans of the first three movies agree, no one blows stuff up like Michael Bay.  And raking in billions of dollars at the international box office, it’s safe to say that the rest of the world agrees.  The scenes featuring transformers was filmed in IMAX 3D, so we suggest that if you plan to see it in IMAX, start checking daily for when CGV will release tickets. Because Koreans love their Transformers too. The movie stars Mark Wahlberg as Cade, a struggling automobile mechanic that discovers that one of his recent acqusiitions is actually a Transformer, which begins a chain reaction of events for him and his unrealistically hot daughter (thanks again Michael Bay). Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Nicola Peltz, and Stanley Tucci. The Latest Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DkIPIkPPbdo
